Rupert Wilson

Rupert has worked with Microsoft SQL Server since 1998 predominantly in the Financial Services Industry.

I have worked in companies being the sole DBA, to being part of teams with 40+ DBAs located in various countries across the globe.

Not only have I sat alongside the application and business teams/manager/developers/Prouduct Managers/CTOs I have supported, in highly pressurised environments but I have collaborated with, and built good working relationships without ever meeting similar teams and individuals face to face.

In my free time I spend several hours a week as a taxi service to my daughter and son who participate in a variety of sports, mainly competitive swimming from local galas to national level.

  • SQL Azure PaaS/IaaS – (virtualisation & consolidation)
  • HA/DR – Availability Groups
  • database and security architecture best practises
  • Performance tuning & baselining – extended events/perfmon/profiler

What my clients and colleagues say about me

“Rupert worked as a SQL Server DBA supporting a range of strategic, critical and challenging SQL Server environments at both Barclays Capital and RBS M&IB that were part of the global applications I managed. He proved to be reliable, hard working and willing to take responsibility of any SQL Server related requests he became involved in. I could rely on Rupert not only for his honesty and ability to work well under pressure but his inherent attitude to work effectively with teams of varying skills, expertise and responsibility levels”
Jas Sanger, Global Head of DSL and Trade Reporting at HSBC Global Banking and Markets
“Rupert is a diligent and highly technical data professional who is well regarded within the business for his SQL Server expertise. He works well to the urgent, critical demands of the business delivering high quality solutions to technical problems. He has been responsible for the development of key projects including a bespoke data obfuscation requirement to serve developers with a lower environment that is statistically representative to allow accurate performance tuning.”
Mohammed Omer, Data Team Lead WorldRemit
“When I worked with Rupert I always found him to be diligent and thorough when dealing with issues, new requirements or general day to day queries. No task was ever too much for him to deal with and the quality of response was always very high. He could work effectively individually or as a team, using his technical strengths where required to get the most appropriate solutions”
Peter Kirkaldy, Head GIS Major Programs Application Portfolio at Standard Chartered Bank
“Mat is a consummate SQL Server DBA with deep technical skills who pays attention to the all important detail; you can be assured that the work Mat delivers is of a high calibre. His knowledge of the product is broad from the core DBMS to the BI components and he augments this well with complementary skills such as PowerShell.”
Mark Dingemans, Bank of America
“I worked with Rupert around 2007/2008 where he was the DBA at GLG Partners. Unlike a lot of the DBA’s I’ve worked with, Rupert was a complete pleasure to work with. He was likeable, knowledgeable and always had time for my annoying questions and issues! Rupert really knows his stuff, to the extent that he’s one of those few ex-colleagues I keep in touch with to occasionally ask for advice, etc. When it comes to databases, Rupert really is the “go-to guy””
Mark Mayes, ETL & Data Developer at Legal & General
“Mat is an excellent dba who is very able to manage difficult clients and situations in his stride. I would highly recommend him to any employer”
Mervyn Coburn, BP
“I worked with Rupert at Deutsche Bank and Barclays Capital. He continually demonstrated an ability to rapidly assess SQL Server related issues and implement solutions accordingly while effectively communicating to everybody involved. On a day-to-day basis he would go about his work diligently, whether it was dealing with random issues across the SQL Server estate or documenting and delivering practical recommendations for current and future SQL Server requirements. He was confident in contributing his ideas and point of view to his fellow DBAs, other technology teams or business stakeholders alike”
Olu Adedeji, Risk Technology Lead at Barclays Capital
“Mat has a strong technical knowledge and can grasp new concepts quickly. He remains professional, focused and calm at all times especially under pressure and I would not hesitate in recommending him”

Faruk Haque, Merrill Lynch
